National Physical and Standard Laboratory

INTRODUCTION:
The main objective of the National Physical and Standard Laboratory (NPSL) is to maintain primary standards of measurement and materials on internationally recognized level.
The NPSL is the national custodian of all physical standards of measurements and materials. In simple terms this in fact means that NPSL is to realize, maintain & disseminate the standards of measurement.
Thus NPSL by maintaining the national standards of measurements and materials acts as the focal a point for all calibration / standardization and testing needs of the country, and is the only certified link to the international measurement system. By this it is meant that NPSL is the only organization within the country which can certify whether a particular measuring instrument conforms to the permissible norms and specifications required for measuring instruments.
NPSL also due to its nature carries out inter comparison of its standards with the ones held internationally so that it can be certain that any measurement made with equipment tested by NPSL conforms to the same fact the essence of the international co-operation under the SI protocol, which requires all measurement worldwide to conform to one and the same standard.

Centres / Divisions:

  • Standards & Measurement Division:

    This divisions is responsible for:
0     Maintenance of National Standards of Measurements for base and derived
           quantities of S.I. units.
0     Calibration of precision measuring equipment and standardization / calibration
of instrument and standards of physical measurements.
The facilities develop so-far, in this Division are at reference / secondary level for mass, length, pressure/ flowmetry , temperature, electrical and time and frequency parameters.
The division also provides consultancy / advisory services to clients on measurement & calibration training in metrology, standards, calibration and training in Lab. Quality Management System bases on ISO 17025.
  • Materials Division:
Materials Division is to serve as the focal point for standardization of materials of technological importance. The main functions of this division are to maintain highest accuracy in chemical analysis and measurements of those parameters, which are required to characterize material. The Division provides service in the following areas:
Development and certification of certified reference material.
    Development of improved measurement techniques.
Calibration of measuring / analytical equipment.
Measurement of trace elements in high purity materials and gases.
R & D Activities and Achievements:

NPSL R & D activities have resulted in the development of some equipment and secondary standards of masses, all of which have been imported to-date.  The efforts to develop indigenous instrumentation would boost up local industry. The NPSL has a professional and non-commercial approach.
Achievements:
Following is the details of its products:
0    Set of secondary standards of masses.
0    Universal clock (Standard / International).
          0    Radio receiving clock.
          0    Digital stop watch.
          0    Stand by power supplies.
Analytical Facilities and Services:

Following facilities are provided by Laboratory
